History of the Department
The Ledbetter Community Fire Department was formed in the early fall of 1978
after six businessmen bought a used 1955 homemade tank truck that had been
converted into a fire apparatus, painted lime green with a big red light and
siren. The businessmen had been contacted by Troy Swinford who owned a local
gas station to see if Troy knew of anyonewho would be willing to organize a
volunteer Fire Department because of the rising cost of insurance premiums
was hrting businesses and a high cost of insurance to homeowners.
Troy contacted his friend Terry Stringer who was involved in a previous
attempt to organize a Fire Department after his mother's house burned with a
fire hydrant in the front yard. There was nothing anyone could do to save
anything. So, Mr. Stringer was vary excited when he learned of the old
tanker the men wanted to donate.
A meeting was held at the Masonic Lodge to organize the department with a
large turnout and Terry Stringer was elected Chief and Troy Swinford was
elected Assistant Chief. With that, the old lime green tanker and a crew of
volunteers who loved their community began a service that as of today has
two fire stations with two new engines and other equipment for fire and
resue opertions. Today, Ledbetter FD has approximately 24 members who answer
calls to fires, auto accidents and medical assists.
The Ledbetter Fire Department was formed by a few local businessmen for
protection of their businesses and residences in 1978. At this time a need
for a community fire department was seen and the department was founded by
George Brian, C.F. Hopkins, Ed Shelton, Harry Harris, Gerald Jeffery and
Ronnie Titsworth. |
